Dim Sum & Jazz CCLXXI - The Mercedes Moore Band
Friday October 2nd
MERCEDES MOORE BAND returns to Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 271st installment of Dim Sum & Jazz - one of San Diego's longest-running weekly live music dining experiences!
Seating begins at 6:00PM Music is from 6:30PM to 8:30PM Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations
About Mercedes Moore” From the moment Mercedes Moore takes the stage you can’t look away. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now.
Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time.
As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.”
It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B to a boatload of classic rock and blue-eyed soul. This does not take into consideration the assortment of duo and trio sets, the occasional jazz venture, and an array of impromptu performances with local and visiting artists. “

About Adam Wolff Adam Wolff has been playing the piano for most of his life. Starting at the age of 8, he spent ten years studying classical piano performance, music theory, and creative music expression. Raised in New York and Chicago, he returned to New York City in the 80s and spent many years playing music full-time in Manhattan. While living in New York, Wolff studied with several great pianists: Barry Harris (Keeper of the Bebop Flame), Mike Longo (Musical Director for Dizzy Gillespie), and Kenny Werner (Author of Effortless Mastery and a global music legend).
He also performed/recorded with many great jazz players including Victor Lewis, Calvin Hill, Rebecca Franks, and others. He was fortunate to record with two of Ahmad Jamal’s drummers: Vernel Fournier and Frank Gant. (Vernel Fournier is credited with developing the iconic drumbeat used in Jamal’s recording of “Poinciana” in the 1950s.)
During this time, Wolff also taught music at the Johnny Colon School of Music in East Harlem, as well as playing in clubs, restaurants, cafes, and private engagements throughout the New York City region. In 1987, he was approached by Long Island University in Brooklyn and offered a full music scholarship. He received a degree with honors in 1990.
Relocating to San Diego in the 1990s, Adam Wolff performed with different groups, ranging from jazz to popular dance music to creative expression performances. In 2004, he co-founded Blue44, a music collective with a distinctive theme of “ambient grooves”. Wolff’s music contains key elements of excitement and hard-swinging, soulful, creative musical expression. These elements come through in all his performances.

Dim Sum & Jazz CCLXXIII - The Zzymzzy Quartet
Friday October 23rd
THE ZZYMZZY QUARTET returns to Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 273rd installment of Dim Sum & Jazz - one of San Diego's longest-running weekly live music dining experiences!
Seating Begins at 6PM. Music from 6:30-8:30PM. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations!
ABOUT ZZYMZZY
Rhymes with ‘Whimsy’
The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions: they just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing!
guitar, vocals – Beston Barnett clarinet – Matt Gill upright bass – Paul Hormick guitar, lead vocals – Pete Miesner
The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians.

“The Garners” is a modern vintage duo/trio that embraces gypsy jazz, 1920’s and 30’s jazz, blues, and folk. They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres.
Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold.
She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig, teach, compose, and record. They can be found performing their blend of swing classics, gypsy jazz, Americana, and originals all over Southern California.

ABOUT THE SOTO SIX
The Soto Six is a group of friends who share a deep passion for jazz music.
In January 2022, The Soto Six began their first weekly residency at Baba Coffee in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Baba has become the Soto Six’s “second home”, and every Friday the group can be found performing on the venue’s patio. Several years in, the Baba residency continues to go strong. Additionally, since 2023 the group has staged concerts at many libraries throughout the county (including several at Carlsbad Library’s Schulman Auditorium), and the band also established Oceanside’s only weekly “Jazz Brunch” taking place at The Brick Hotel on Sunday mornings.
Presently, The Soto Six continues to expand their live performance schedule and works tirelessly to bring live jazz to diverse audiences one performance at a time. The band routinely performs in a variety of settings, with varied instrumentation/personnel, and often with less than six total band members, but one thing is always present: love and passion for the music. There is no telling what the future holds for The Soto Six, but the band would like to thank everyone who has been supportive of their endeavors over the years.

The dinner menu is quite good. They have a lot of nice banquet style Cantonese dishes that I have not encountered elsewhere in San Diego. It all tastes fresh. Prices are reasonable. The restaurant is huge and has a lot of tables and space for private events. Parking lot is also large.

The best dim sum in San Diego! The restaurant is clean, with a wide selection of dishes to choose from. We received excellent service-very attentive and friendly. There are also many other interesting menu options beyond dim sum. Golden Island has become our favorite spot for family and friends to gather. Thank you for always providing such delicious food!
